The period from 1975 to 2025 was established by the World Nations Organization as the Aging Era. This is due to the fact that the world population of elderly is increasing, and the life cycle where the aging process is taking place is being extended in at least 20 years. Human aging, then, becomes another social matter that the institutions must care about. Universities, as social institutions, must fulfill these demands. Aware of its social role the University of Cruz Alta, since the beginning of 2008, has implanted, through an inter-disciplinar Human Aging Study Group, the Third Age Open University Program. Thus, the main goal of this paper will be the aging process as a social matter, the University as the locus for the discussion of new social demands and the reporting of this experience at the University of Cruz Alta. |
